SJHL CanaltaSIM opinion and Recap
So far I believe that it is safe to say that the #SJHLCanaltaSIM has been a big success, every stream has been an improvement from the one prior and has been putting up big numbers on the NHL 20 page for viewers. The SJHL and !KS have done a fantastic job with the production in doing their best to make CPU Vs CPU simulation as entertaining as possible for fans to watch.
The amount of effort that needed to be put into creating the teams jerseys and rosters is incredible, shoutout to Alex Watson for putting in the time to put all the teams together in NHL 20, an extremely time consuming task that is 100 percent appreciated to see being done.
The first round was highly intense as Sunday we saw the Yorkton Terriers knock off the La Ronge Ice Wolves in overtime of game 6 by a score of 4-3 on a goal from Jordan Guiney who potted his 2nd goal of the night.
Monday night we saw a WILD game 7 between the Battlefords North Stars and the Nipawin Hawks. The first period had both teams go back and forth however neither could find the back of the net, until Nipawin was able to sneak one past Stars goaltender Kristian Lyon, but not before being interfered with by Jake Tremblay in the crease, the goal counted with just 3 seconds remaining in the period, giving all the momentum to the Hawks. Shots were 14-12 for the North Stars after 1.
Early on in the second period Nipawin built on their momentum as Riley Bruce sniped one home high blocker side from the hashmarks to build a 2-0 lead and giving people belief that they can pull off the big upset. At the midway point of the period Steven Kesslering would get the North Stars on the board with a fast tic-tac-toe play in front of the net to cut the Hawks lead in half. Both teams would go on to trade goals again before the end of the period resulting in Nipawin holding a 3-2 lead and being just 20 minutes away from moving on to the next round. Shots through 40 minutes were 28-24 for the Hawks.
The first half of the 3rd period went back and forth, I would say a slight edge to Battlefords however as Hawryluk had to make multiple big saves to maintain the lead, until with 9:03 remaining in the 3rd period when Walter Somers was able to get one past the Hawks netminder on another perfect shot, this time being high glove side. Less than a minute later Elijah Loon-Stewardson would fire up the Virtual Civic Centre in North Battleford as he is able to sneak a low wrister just under the glove of the Hawks netminder to give the North Stars their first lead of the night with only 8:23 remaining in regulation. The back and forth battle in Game 7 would only continue to escalate as the Hawks Carson Erhardt drove to the net to get a tap in just inside the goalpost to tie the game back up at 4 goals a piece with 6:55 left in the 3rd, an absolutely wild 2 minutes 18 seconds in Game 7 would take us all the way to overtime. Through 60 minutes the shots were 44-39 for the Battlefords North Stars.
There are not many words better in hockey than "Game 7, Overtime". Overtime magic, someone is going to step up, someone is going to be the hero, and on the other end, a team will see their season come to an end.
It didn't take long for things to get crazy in the extra frame as 38 seconds in Matthias Urbanski thought he had the series winning goal in front on a rebound from Hilts, the referee waved off the goal immediately saying it was goalie interference. This is where the controversy really kicked in. Go way back to the end of the 1st when Nipawin scored the opening goal, the Hawks had bumped Lyon out of position causing him to have no chance to make a save. That goal counted without being waved off and looked at, the Stars overtime goal should have counted as Hawryluk dove out of his crease to cover the puck and missed allowing a wide open net for Urbanski. The goal was reviewed and remained no goal, infuriating North Stars fans in the chat on stream. With 11:41 remaining in the first overtime, we got the overtime hero in Elijah Loon-Stewardson on a bad turnover behind the net to the middle of the ice where he would fire the puck low glove side on the hawks netminder to complete the hattrick, the series, and to send the North Stars onto the next round where they will meet the Yorkton Terriers.
I will be trying to do these recaps after every game from #SJHLCanaltaSIM going forward so any advice I can get to make these better im all ears to listen and improve.
