SJHL CanaltaSim Melfort Mustangs vs Flin Flon Bombers Game 3 Highlights/Recap

After a dominant 7-1 thrashing by the Mustangs, Flin Flon decided to make a couple changes, one of those changes would not be in goal though as Jacob Delorme would get the chance to redeem himself after giving up 4 goals last night and being pulled after the 1st period. The Bombers decided to insert Dman Cole Vardy into the lineup while also changing up their number 1 Powerplay unit by running with Martin, Houle, Rafuse, Malo, Easton. Shoutout to @sjsiminsider on twitter for that info.
Everyone inside the Northern Lights Palace is buzzing and ready to roll for game 3. just 41 seconds into the game, the Mustangs would come just inches away from opening the scoring on a slapper from Nolan Kadachuk at the point, as Delorme makes the blocker save to swat the puck away it would then go off the backside of Bombers Dman Mason Martin and on to the stick of Alec Malo who would fumble the puck a bit, the only reason this puck stays out is because Martin's stick gets caught on the post causing a strange animation where the puck comes to a screeching halt on the goal line, Martin would reach one last time at the puck to keep it out and manages to as he drags it along the goal line and off the post where Jacob Delorme has to reach behind and cover the puck behind his pads. https://clips.twitch.tv/SassyVainRutabagaMoreCowbell Delorme would look very strong in this opening period as he tries to rebound from being pulled early on in game 2, he had to make many quality saves, and also had much better rebound control.
Just under 5 minutes into the game Flin Flon would strike first on a goal from Hayden Clayton picking the puck up behind the net off of the Ochitwa turnover and tricking Mustangs netminder Shawn Parkinson with a quick little move to open the 5 hole and give the Bombers an early 1-0 lead. https://clips.twitch.tv/DeafBillowingMomTebowing Most of the first 10 minutes of this game would be dominated by the Bombers with lots of zone time and a good amount of quality shots that Parkinson needed to stop to keep this a 1 goal game. Delorme had to stay very strong between the pipes in the back half of the opening frame as Melfort really started to pour it on searching for their first of the night, Delorme would make a big save on Zach Anderson in front of the net after the Bombers defence had a collapse with no one inside the hashmarks, it was a great pass from the corner by #2 Andrew Hunt who I believe is normally wearing #3 most nights,  https://clips.twitch.tv/SoftRepleteCrocodileDoggo  right after the following faceoff Kyle Bosch would get a near identical play on the Bombers goaltender this time from the right side of the ice, however it would be the same result as Delorme would stop the puck with his chest and cover it up. Moments later the Mustangs would get yet another chance as Seth McCulloch tries to sneak one 5 hole but just couldn't get enough on the shot.
Game 3 would remain at a score of 1-0 through the end of the 1st period thanks to previously mentioned strong goaltending from both teams, your shot total through 1 period of play is 18-13 in favour of the Melfort Mustangs, time on attack being 2:50-2:15 also for Melfort, and in the faceoff circle its a slight advantage at 8-6 for the Flin Flon Bombers. Leading Flin Flon in icetime was Mason Martin who played 8:39 in the opening frame, and leading Melfort in icetime was Alex Rondeau who played 8:13 in the first. A couple things to look out for in the 2nd period, will Melfort be able to crack Delorme as they have in the previous 2 games? Can Delorme build off that strong 1st period after having a shaky game 2? And lastly will we see the Bombers new #1 powerplay unit go to work?
As we start the 2nd period both goalies would continue to play solid through the first half of the period with neither willing to crack and give up the next goal. With 10:19 remaining in the 2nd Ben Tkachuk would take a tripping penalty, meaning that new #1 unit would get a crack at the games first powerplay, We all know how poorly the Bombers Powerplay was in game 2 and it was clear the coaching staff noticed as well, hence the change to the top unit to try and find a spark. The Bombers powerplay didn't do anything at all the first 45 seconds as they couldn't even get into the zone, once Flin Flon finally got into the zone it wound up being a quick one timer on a pass from Chase Haygarth over to Zach Bannister who was denied by Parkinson due to his big frame and excellent rebound control, that would be the Bombers only good scoring chance on the games opening powerplay, so far showing the change to be ineffective. Moments later the Mustangs would take yet another powerplay to give Flin Flon another opportunity to get their powerplay back on track. Flin Flon again would start slow as they couldn't generate anything in the first minute, the Bombers would really turn it on in the back half of this powerplay as Bannister would get a solid opportunity on a breakaway but gets turned away by Parkinson followed up by a slapshot from the point by Easton Haygarth that goes up off the blocker of Parkinson and out of play. Flin Flon on the powerplay has started out 0/2 so far tonight but is slowly starting to play a little better with each chance they get. In the dying minutes of the 2nd period it would be the Bombers who strike once again to extend their lead to 2 on a beautiful Tic-Tac-Toe play finding Chase Haygarth in the slot to fire it blocker side where Parkinson was already way over on the right side of the crease leaving that entire blocker side wide open for the shot to find the back of the net. https://clips.twitch.tv/OnerousEsteemedRuffRaccAttack  This 2nd period was dominated almost from start to finish by Flin Flon as they just piled all of the pressure onto Melfort, if not for Parkinson this game could be a lot worse than 2-0 going into the 3rd period.
The shots on net through 40 minutes are 30-21 for the Bombers, faceoffs are pretty even at 16-15 with the slight advantage going to the Mustangs, the time on attack is 5:25-4:53 in favour of Flin Flon. Delorme continues to look strong for the Bombers meanwhile Parkinson continues to be solid at the other end despite allowing the 2 goals so far.
Early in the 3rd the Mustangs would turn up the pressure off the opening faceoff as they push for a pair of goals to try and tie the game in the final 20 minutes. All of this pressure would ultimately lead to a hooking penalty against the Bombers, this will be the Stangs first powerplay of the night and at a crucial point of the game. Melfort's powerplay is absolutely buzzing however they would come up short in scoring on it as they missed a wide open net on a slapper from the circles, they were also denied a likely goal as the Bombers backend was able to breakup the pass in front of the goaltender causing the puck to jump over Zach Anderson's stick. Mustangs forward Seth McCulloch could be seeing Jacob Delorme in his nightmares tonight if he doesn't bury the puck soon, McCulloch has had atleast 5 good scoring chances tonight but hasn't been able to execute on any as of yet. Still 13 minutes to get one however Melfort still in a spot where they need 2 goals to tie this game up. Flin Flon's top line came alive on the very next shift and had 2-3 great chances where Shawn Parkinson had to be near perfect to keep the game within reach. With just 11 minutes left in regulation Melfort would finally sneak one through on Delorme to break his shutout bid and also give the Mustangs new life thanks to Ben Tkachuk scoring 5 hole from right in front of the crease after the pass from Colton Schell was able to find its way through to the front of the goal. https://clips.twitch.tv/NiceTriangularSandpiperVoHiYo
Following the Tkachuk goal, Flin Flon would come right back down for a big chance of their own as Caleb Franklin skates around looking to create space, he would get free and wide open in the slot to step right into a hard wrister on Parkinson's glove hand side, Franklin got the shot past the glove of Parkinson but just couldn't get the puck to squeeze the inside of the post, keeping this a 2-1 hockey game with time beginning to wind down. https://clips.twitch.tv/SullenBoxyPenguinPrimeMe
The game is now into the final 5 minutes of regulation and the Mustangs will only press harder for the tying goalfrom this point on, only moments later Schell would take a one timer from the corner of the blue line just to get it towards the net, the puck would catch Delorme high off his shoulder leading to the puck jumping and bouncing all over the place where it looks like Mustangs Dman Odowichuk was standing in front of the net to tie this game up at 2 a piece with only 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd period! and also lifting the roof off of the Northern Lights Palace, giving their fans even more life as the game begins to reach next goal wins territory. https://clips.twitch.tv/CrowdedInexpensivePartridgeDatSheffy
Both of these teams would manage to survive the final 4 minutes after a wild 3rd period results in Melfort coming back from 2 goals down to send this game into overtime, and a large part of why this game is getting to overtime is Parkinson coming up with clutch saves like he has all postseason so far.
Unfortunately was not able to see the stats for the end of the 3rd period so I could not give you guys an update as to what the shots, faceoffs, and time on attack were for the 3rd period.
Both teams would come out firing here in overtime but the biggest chance to start came 4 minutes in as Caleb Franklin was able to walk all the way right in front of Jacob Delorme only to get robbed twice in a row, Delorme looking as strong as he has all game after giving up those 2 3rd period goals. Delorme would once again need to come up with a big save this time being on Albertson who has been impressive at times in this series despite being down on the 4th line. Flin Flon with 13:30 to go in the 1st overtime would get an offensive zone faceoff, this would be the beginning of the play where it finishes off with finding Reid Robertson in front who does a little turn and shoot and finds the back of the net to send the fans in Melfort home disappointed after coming all the way back in the 3rd period. For Flin Flon, well this means we have ourselves a series, the Bombers were 1 shot away from going down 3-0 in this series but instead they come out, pick up the W and give themselves hope at getting home ice advantage back for game 5 if they can pull out another road win on Monday night. https://clips.twitch.tv/AwkwardHorribleClipsmomKevinTurtle
Your final shot tally is 50-42 for the Bombers, time on attack just about even at 9:13-9:06, so the slightest of an edge to Flin Flon as well, and the faceoffs were 27-20 also in favour of Flin Flon.
Your 3 Stars for Game 3 are:
     3. Hayden Clayton Flin Flon Forward- 1 goal, 1 assist
     2. Shawn Parkinson Goalie- Melfort- 47 saves on 50 shots, .940 SV%
     1. Jacob Delorme Goalie- Flin Flon- 40 saves on 42 shots, .952 SV%
Honourable Mention To:
Reid Robertson Forward Flin Flon- OT GWG
This was a game that Flin Flon desperately needed to see from Jacob Delorme, I truly believe if he had another game like game 2 that he would not be getting the start come game 4. he shut his critics up tonight with a huge performance between the pipes. one of those critics 100% including myself as I was expecting to see Schell tonight to start. Parkinson played like his usual self, one of the top goaltenders if not the number 1 goalie in the entire postseason so far.
A couple hours after Game 3 came to a close, it was announced via @sjsiminsider on twitter that the Bombers will be mixing up their lines for Game 4 in hopes to get their big guns rolling as they have been quiet all series long so far. I would definitely not be surprised if we see Bannister/Lemyre taking a spot on that top line while moving one of the big guns down for a more favorable matchup throughout the game. If I had to guess Ill say that Lemyre moves up to the #1 Center role while Malo moves on down to the 2nd line. My prediction for Game 4 is a monster night for atleast 2/3 of the Bombers top line from tonight along with a 7-2 win for Flin Flon. Make sure to tune into Game 4 at 6pm Saskatchewan time, 8pm EST at www.twitch.com/sjhlhockey
